In laser resurfacing, sometimes called "laser peel," a laser
is used to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin, layer by
layer. The procedure is most commonly used to minimize the
appearance of fine lines, especially around the mouth and the
eyes. However, it is also effective in treating facial scars
or areas of uneven pigmentation. Laser resurfacing may be
performed on the whole face or in specific regions. Often, the
procedure is done in conjunction with another cosmetic
operation, such as a facelift or eyelid surgery.

Laser skin resurfacing is a safe and
effective way to make old skin look younger. Laser skin
resurfacing can reduce or eliminate the wrinkles and fine
lines on the face; smooth scars caused by acne, chicken pox,
or trauma; and remove sun spots, age spots, moles, and
pre-cancers from the face. Laser skin resurfacing is an
outpatient procedure that takes anywhere from 15 minutes to
one hour. Because the laser energy is so precise, the depth of
resurfacing can be tailored to meet the patients individual
needs.
Laser resurfacing is a relatively quick procedure. When the
imperfections are especially deep, Dr. Yousefi may recommend
that the resurfacing be performed in two or more stages. A
laser is used to send light to the skin that will be
resurfaced.
When the procedure is over, your may choose to treat the
resurfaced skin with applications of protective creams or
ointments until healing is complete.

Recovery Time |
|
You are likely to experience some mild
swelling and discomfort after laser resurfacing. However, this
can be controlled with ice packs and medications prescribed by
Dr. Yousefi.
During this phase of healing, it is very important that you
not pick the crusts off the treated area or scarring may
result. Most patients are free of crusts by about 10 days
post-operatively. Redness may persist for several weeks. |
